NetSuite EDI Integration — Tools & Resources
Set up electronic data interchange with trading partners. Automate purchase orders, invoices, and ASNs to meet retailer requirements.
Overview
EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is the mandatory data exchange format for most large retailers and 3PLs in North America. If you are supplying Target, Walmart, Home Depot, or any major grocery chain, you are required to exchange 850 (Purchase Orders), 856 (Advance Ship Notices), and 810 (Invoices) documents in X12 or EDIFACT format over AS2 or SFTP. Failing to comply results in chargebacks — fees the retailer deducts from your payment — that can be substantial enough to eliminate the margin on an order.
EDI integration with NetSuite has two layers: the translation layer (converting X12/EDIFACT documents to and from NetSuite transaction formats) and the communication layer (AS2 or SFTP connections to each trading partner's VAN or direct connection). Most EDI SaaS platforms handle both layers, but the ongoing operational work — adding new trading partners, handling document format changes when retailers update their requirements, resolving failed transmissions — requires either dedicated EDI tooling or a managed EDI service.
For businesses with a small number of high-volume trading partners, a direct EDI integration with a dedicated SuiteApp is typically the most cost-effective approach. For businesses managing 20+ trading partners with varying document requirements, a managed EDI service that handles the mapping work and monitors transmissions is worth the premium — the internal staff time required to maintain direct integrations at that scale often exceeds the service cost.
